Working to repay a loan under terms that guarantee it never clears. It is the most common form of modern slavery: roughly one in five of the estimated 27 million people trapped in forced labour worldwide are held through debt. In South Asia's brick kilns — where more than 23 million people work in India alone — a small loan for a funeral, a wedding, or a hospital bill becomes a debt that consumes generations.
